Identify the arrangement you are relying on

The National Immigration Administration describes a 24-hour transit arrangement for eligible onward travel; leaving the restricted port area requires permission. Its separate 240-hour policy has nationality, port, onward-ticket and permitted-area conditions.

Do not assume that a long layover automatically lets you leave the airport, or that an article about one passport applies to yours. Ordinary visa-free entry is a separate policy and may have different conditions.

Your itinerary-check worksheet

• Passport: nationality, document type, expiry date and any special circumstances.
• Purpose: what you will actually do in China.
• Route: origin, every mainland stop, onward destination and any return leg.
• Dates: arrival and departure, including overnight date changes.
• Tickets: confirmed onward arrangements where required.
• Ports and area: whether your entry, exit and planned movements are permitted.

Verify before booking a city excursion

1. Read the current NIA transit guidance and the policy for your intended arrangement.
2. Check your Chinese embassy or consulate’s official information for your passport and purpose.
3. Ask the airline how your full itinerary will be checked at boarding.
4. Keep the relevant confirmations and travel documents accessible.

If you are considering leaving during a layover

Our planning advice is to budget for any permission process, baggage arrangements, the trip into the city and the airport’s return and check-in requirements. Do not spend the whole connection window on sightseeing.

Have a plan for remaining at the airport if permission is not granted or timing becomes tight. For a hotel stay, ask about cancellation and late arrival before paying.
