Look up as well as into the shops
Zhongshan Road has been a major shopping street since the early twentieth century. The city’s English destination feature is a useful introduction to its history. Look for the covered arcades and the rhythm of windows and balconies above the shopfronts.
Bashi means the Eighth Market, 第八市场. Treat the market and its surrounding lanes as a place where people shop and work. The draw is the everyday activity, not a controlled visitor attraction with a set sequence of exhibits.

Two ways to plan the walk
For market activity: start around Bashi in the morning, browse a small area, then continue towards Zhongshan Road. Our suggestion is to leave the afternoon free rather than extend this into an all-day food crawl.
For an easy first evening: begin on Zhongshan Road, notice the arcades, and choose one nearby lane to explore. Add Bashi only if the businesses you want are still open. There is no single market-and-street closing time.
Use your map to connect the two districts on public streets. Decide where to finish before you begin, especially if you are tired from an arrival flight. The 2018 walking account is useful for broad orientation, but its hotel and food prices are historical.
Order a little, then decide what comes next
Start with one small order instead of committing to a large meal at the first stall. Read the displayed price and confirm whether seafood is priced by item or weight before ordering. If you need ingredient information, show a translated question and ask the seller; a photograph or dish name cannot confirm what is in it.
This guide does not rank restaurants or repeat claims that a shop is universally loved by locals. Businesses change, tastes differ, and a long queue alone is not a reason to abandon the rest of your afternoon.
Practical details
Use 中山路步行街 for the shopping street and 厦门第八市场 for Bashi in your map or destination card. These names identify areas rather than a guaranteed vehicle entrance. Agree a suitable street-side meeting point if travelling by taxi.
Carry a payment backup, keep space for shoppers carrying goods, and ask before close-up portraits. If the weather turns, shorten the walk instead of treating every arcade as a continuous sheltered route. It is easy to return another day.
Take the address with you
Open a Chinese destination card to show a driver. Confirm the entrance against the attraction’s current instructions.
