Set up the trip before assigning days

This is our editorial itinerary, not a tour booking or a field-tested timetable. It assumes a base on Xiamen Island and three full days. If you arrive after lunch or leave early, remove a half-day block instead of compressing everything.

Check your ferry availability first, then move the island day to suit it. Keep the most weather-dependent outing flexible. Prepare payments, mobile data and a Chinese hotel card before starting.

Day 1 · Old town, then the southern neighbourhoods

Morning: take the Bashi and Zhongshan Road walk. Pick a small breakfast or lunch stop and take time to look above the storefronts.

Afternoon: travel to the Nanputuo neighbourhood, if temple admission has been confirmed, then keep Shapowei for a relaxed harbour walk. Use transport between districts rather than making the entire day a continuous walk.

Optional replacement: if you have a confirmed XMU reservation, use that time slot instead of one of the afternoon stops. Do not add an uncertain campus queue to an already full day. If the morning takes longer, go straight to Shapowei.

Day 2 · Give Gulangyu the day

Follow the Gulangyu guide: a lane walk, one main attraction and time to eat or sit by the water. Keep your return pier and the booking conditions within reach.

Leave the evening on Xiamen Island open. A tired traveller benefits more from dinner near the hotel than from another district crossing. If ferry services are disrupted, exchange this day with a land-based day and recheck the operator’s notices.

Day 3 · Choose garden and coast, or Jimei

Plants and sea: spend the morning at the Botanical Garden. After lunch and a rest, make a short Huangcuo coastal outing. Add Zengcuo’an only if you want a separate food stop and still have energy.

Architecture and history: replace the garden-and-coast day with Jimei School Village. Allow a half day there plus the journey, then leave a free block for a favourite place or a slower meal back on the island.

These are alternatives. Trying to do the garden, Huangcuo and Jimei on the same day creates extra travel and weakens the reason for visiting each.

Make sensible swaps

  • Hot or wet weather: reduce exposed walking and take longer breaks. A café pause is an option; severe-weather closures must be respected.
  • Limited mobility or children: choose shorter out-and-back walks and one main stop per half day. Confirm step-free access with the venue rather than assuming it from a photograph.
  • No campus reservation: keep the temple neighbourhood and Shapowei; no replacement attraction is required.
  • A train or flight on Day 3: do one nearby stop, check the correct station or airport terminal, and leave the cross-city excursion for another visit.
